Sleaford Light Night
History of Sleaford Arts Festival

Sleaford Festival has its roots in events held in 2004 and 2005 as part of the town’s involvement in Market Towns Week, a regional initiative which was piloted in Lincolnshire by Sleaford. During this pilot year, the embryonic Festival consisted of a wide range of events in the town, culminating in a spectacular outdoor processional event Follow The Trail.

Pre-event participatory workshops introduced local schools to professional artists who were taking part in the Festival, and the school groups performed their work prior to the evening outdoor extravaganza for the whole town. Performances included work by the Real Macaws and Heir of Insanity and fire sculptures and pyrotechnics by Walk the Plank.

In 2005, Market Towns Week was rolled out across the East Midlands with around 30 towns, including Sleaford, taking part. Artists included the Dhol Drummers who visited three separate site-specific dance and music performances by local schools. Heir of Insanity’s performance was followed by a procession, accompanied by site-specific pyrotechnics, to the final section of spectacular fire and fireworks by Walk The Plank.
